ClubAid: How your phone can help you order drinks

It’s happened to all of us at least once: you’re standing in a busy club trying to order some drinks, but the bartender just doesn’t seem to notice you. Everybody else seems to be getting his or her drinks, but somehow you’re being skipped. You know calling out for the bartender won’t help you, since he won’t be able to hear you over the loud music. You’ve no other option than to try to get his attention by waving your hands around.

This is just one example of what can go wrong when ordering drinks in a bar. Think of trying to convey your order over the loud music (“Two whiskey-colas, one baileys with ice and three beers, please!” – “What?!” – “Two whiskey-colas, one baileys, three beers!!!”). And how will you know how much to pay? These frustrations have inspired me and my teammates at Tilburg University to start designing the ClubAid.
ClubAid is a multifunctional tool to assist both you and the bartender in making the club experience less frustrating and more fun. We intend to design a full system, including mobile app, in-bar touchscreens and bartender interface. We are currently working on figuring out which problem-solving options will be featured and how to include elements that will bring even more fun to a nice evening out.

A major inspiration so far has been the already existing Ywaiter. This mobile app, focused on restaurants in the US, allows you to check out the menu, make reservations, get directions with Google Maps, order your food and drinks, pay your bill. The completeness that this app offers is an inspiration, and we will try to make ClubAid an equally complete system. When it comes to figuring out how to make mobile payments possible, recent developments at Starbucks and Twitpay seem very promising.

See you soon!
